Melissa's Breast Cancer Battle

Donation protected
Some of you know my sister Melissa as a family member or as a funny, kind friend from Siena College or John F Kennedy High School. While others may know her as a dedicated 5th grade teacher or fellow parent carting her kids from one sports field to another.

Over the Holidays Melissa was diagnosed with an invasive type of breast cancer. A second biopsy confirmed the cancer has spread to a lymph node under her armpit. While she is in the process of getting a second opinion for next steps from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, her treatment is certain to include chemotherapy, surgery  (either lumpectomy or mastectomy depending on the chemo success and genetic testing results), radiation and then hormone therapy.

We know the next year will be very challenging for Melissa, her husband Jason and their two young boys Jackson & Parker. However, Melissa is such a positive, bright and energetic woman, we know she will win the battle! But one of the main challenges for their family will be financial. Melissa will be out of work on unpaid leave for the remainder of the school year. Her unpaid leave may go into the beginning of the next school year depending on her recovery and treatment.  Jason will also have to take unpaid leave sporadically over the next year to take Melissa to appointments. In addition, there will be medical and treatment costs not covered by insurance and other various items to help keep Melissa comfortable during her battle.

Like so many busy working Mothers, she is completely selfless. Always putting her family and friends first. Whether she's juggling transportation for her kid’s sports, volunteering to help with the kids at the Christmas Eve Mass pageant at church or running a clothing drive to help students at her school, Melissa is constantly working to make others lives better.

On behalf of my sister and her family I thank you for taking the time to read this.  Please keep my sister and her family in your prayers.  Any donation you can make would be greatly appreciated. Any funds that remain once the battle is won will be donated to cancer research.
