Who I Am
My name is Jennifer Pierre and I am a graduate student and entrepreneur at Babson College in Massachusetts. Over the years I have mentored, tutored, and volunteered with countless male youth. I have seen firsthand the way many of the boys maneuvered through life and it put into perspective how different society cultivates children based on race and gender.
Many of the kids I mentored dreamed and inspired within a bubble because of circumstance and environment. The only real change of course happened through an intervention of a new mindset and exposure to new ideas.
The Company
Melanites is a toy company I founded aiming to intercept the glass ceiling placed on young boys' mind about what they can be when they grow up and how they are supposed to express themselves without the pressures of hyper-masculinity and gender roles.
Mission
Melanites will expand the breadth of representation available in the toy industry simultaneously through race and gender with the first line of boy dolls with different ethnic backgrounds. This social innovation venture is a celebration of brown boyhood!
It is important for children at a young age to have a sense of self-pride. While this sense of self can be formed by many factors, research has found that there is a direct correlation between playing with relatable toys and self-esteem.
Melanites is showcasing positive images during the formative stages of identity creation to cultivate curiosity, adventure, and fun.
Why we need your help
For the past 6 months I have been cultivating relationships with manufacturers who will be able to bring my vision to life. I have successfully narrowed it down to the best quality supplier but need your help to fund the Melanites Prototype (The picture seen above is a girl doll turned into a boy doll.)
This prototype will stand 18 inches tall with a fully vinyl body with joints in the elbows, wrists, and knees for maximum functionality and fun.
100% of the funds from the GoFundMe will cover the full production cost of the following (All sample photos. These do not depic the final design of the Melanites doll):
