Brian Miguel Lopez, a 5th grade student at Cali Calmecac Language Academy in Windsor, had a planned heart surgery at UCSF on August 8th. Unfortunately, he is not recovering as expected. Though this was his fourth heart surgery, he is facing serious complications. On Tuesday, August 21st, Doctors initiated ECMO support. On Friday, August 24th, they were able to close him back up, however, he remains on life support. According to his mother, Lucia, the timeline for his recovery is unknown. He could be "asleep" for weeks, months.

As of 9/12, he remains in a medically induced coma on ECMO. Doctors have not given up and are continuing to try and save his life. At this point, the timeline for his recovery seems unknown, which is incredibly worrisome for his family and friends.

His parents have faith that he can make it through this and get better. This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for all who love Brian. We are all praying for the family and hoping that he will recover.  At this point, the family is asking for visitors to come and provide moral support for them, also to spend time with Brian so that they can rest, sleep, and spend time with their other two children. To get on the visitor rotation, please contact the organizer of this campaign.

His father works at a local winery and his mother cleans houses. They have two other children. Since his operation, they have not worked as they have stayed with him at UCSF.

Please consider a donation to the family to help cover their lost wages, help pay their bills, gas back and forth to San Francisco, food, etc.

Today, 9/4/18, Doctors tried weaning Brian off of the ECMO. So far, he has been off of it for an hour and a half, and the goal is to keep him off of it for 5 hours per day. After 5 hours of being off of it, they will put him back on it. He is still in very critical condition. Please pray for him and continue to support his family.

Brain still has the ECMO support. His mother reports that he's stable...he hasn't gotten better but he also hasn't gotten any worse. They tried to take him off of it today but had to put him back on it. According to Mom, they may need to remove it early next week. He is not a candidate for a heart transplant due to a hernia that he's had. The family thanks you for your support during this difficult time. Brian is awake but cannot talk, he seems to understand what others are saying to him. We can pray and hope for the best.
