My mother, Heather Leonard, needs financial help to get urgent medical treatment for progressive heart failure. She’s originally from western Massachusetts, and moved here to Montserrat in 1990, where I am her oldest daughter, and her youngest child is just 9 years old and she is the everything for my brother, her 14-year old special needs son.
Medical care in Montserrat is not what it is in Massachusetts, and her heart disease has gone undiagnosed for a while now.
Three years ago she began to experience joint pains and shortness of breath. It was scary, since no one could find out what was wrong - the hospital here has only general doctors, and she just kept getting worse. They first diagnosed my mother with hypothyroidism and asthma, but then the pains became even worse. Then they thought she might have rheumatoid arthritis. But then they did a blood test, and it wasn’t that either.
Finally, a visiting cardiology team from New York’s Mt Sinai Hospital was able to give her a heart ultrasound and we got the bad news – she has progressive heart failure and desperately needs treatment. Well, that was actually the good news, which is that we finally have a diagnosis.
The even worse news, though, is that there is no way for her to get this treatment in Montserrat.
She would be able to get treatment in England, but she does not have the funds to travel there, and to pay for rent and food. They estimate the treatment would take about 6 months, and that’s what she needs money for: travel to England, and room and board for 6 months. Please help!
