Medical for Charlie the Senior Dog

Donation protected
Charlie was brought in to Broward Animal Control early July. There was no further information provided on how he arrived in their care.

Unfortunately - a good percentage of senior dogs get “dumped” at a local shelters, dog parks, groomers or even brought to the vet to be  euthanized. Even though their dog gave them years of loyalty and love... some people don’t want to “deal” with an aging dog or prefer to have “brand new” puppies (someone actually said that to me!! instead of wanting a senior - they want a “brand new” one)

When I first saw Charlie (at the time his name was “unknown”) he was in a kennel with about 4 other dogs and he was getting pushed around when they all wanted to greet me. I watched how he maneuvered  around the other dogs and made his way over to me. He’s a Jack Russell Terrier...and they said he’s 10 but I think he *might* be much older than that. We spent time alone playing ball, I would toss the tennis ball and he’d bring it back again and again to play (which was such a cute sight to see bc of how big the ball was compared to his small mouth) I could see his bones, and he looked like he just needed a good bath. He had plenty of energy and life in him! I could not leave knowing that this bright sweet senior dog was going to have his life cut short....

Charlie had to wait a couple more days to be (I guess medically) “sterilized” by the vet at the shelter. He was found to be heart worm positive and thanks to Friends of Broward Animal Control his heart worm treatment is paid for and he will be treated by Animal Aid in Oakland Park,FL Charlie has since been on antibiotics and once he completes the rest of the 30 days of that he will begin his H.W procedure/treament

We are so very greatful and humbled for the assistance in his heart worm treatment by Roz Harris and Friends of Broward Animal Control because there would be no way I could personally pay for it.  I’ve been personally dealing with my own health issues that have put a strain on my finances and work availability. My husband and I also have 3 other dogs that we provide the nothing but the best for in care and love. Providing sufficient care for them puts a financial strain as well. however, anyone who has a furry family member and companion... we all know they are beyond worth it.

I’ve decided to start a fundraiser to aid Charlie in paying for his medical bills. Charlie has to have dental work (his teeth are very built up with  plaque and probably will need if not few but several teeth pulled) this has to be done most likely before he begins his heartworm treatment because of possible  disease or infection.  I have already paid out of pocket (I didn’t want to wait in the unknown) and had his blood work done and an X-ray of his heart/chest... both came back great according to the Vet who reviewed them. His lungs are clear, his heart is not enlarged or damaged from the H.W and his blood work results all came back great just his white blood cells are “ok”)

When he first got home with us he did have some vomiting and diarrhea but thanks to Nova Animal Hospital (a partner with Broward Animal Control) he was able to be treated for that along with getting his ears a much needed cleaning ! He was also found to have a level 2 out of 6 heart murmur but the Vet said that it might go away after the HW treatment.

Charlie is a sweet little gentleman. He enjoys naps, cuddles and sunbathing. He also enjoys following me around... He LOVES American cheese and playing ball. He’s slow and steedy and some times a little wobbly. He’s most likely deaf or hard-of-hearing (and that’s okay!!)  When he gets his bursts of energy and likes to play around with his other furry family members.

All donations received will go directly to fund Charlie’s care and any amount over what is needed for Charlie will then be donated to Friends of Broward Animal Care.
