Medical Expenses for Mike Saunders

A Vietnam War veteran and long-time Salina, KS, resident, Michael Saunders and his wife, Sherri, find themselves in need of support from their community. In October 2018, Mike was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his throat, attached to his lymph node. He started a 12-week cancer treatment regimen of chemotherapy and radiation the day after Christmas. It was tough on his body, but Mike is a fighter and remained in good spirits. 

Immediately following the completion of his cancer treatment, instead of celebrating, the family launched into yet another medical emergency. Due to complications from the cancer-fighting medications combined with a preexisting gastronomical issue, Mike landed back in the hospital with a ruptured colon, leading to emergency surgery. As he was recovering in the ICU, he went into cardiac arrest and, terrifyingly, flat-lined twice. If it weren't for Sherri being in the room, we might not have Mike with us today.

Fortunately, things seem to be smoothing out since that last scare. While still in the hospital, Mike is recovering at a good pace and is looking forward to being reunited with his granddaughter, Annabelle, who misses her papa. Plus, he's eager to meet another very special family member -- his newest granddaughter, Adeline, who was born while he was in the ICU. 

As is bound to happen, as the medical bills have started piling up, so has the stress for both Mike and Sherri. They've both worked hard in the Salina community for many years, but medical expenses, every day bills and Mike's inability to work right now are draining them financially, and the situation is becoming serious.
