Medical expenses for Luisa

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to put in a larger update since it is just past the 1 year anniversary of my accident. It has been a very long road of recovery, lots of pain, fatigue and depression but I also have lots of love, support, and positive results. I have been able to pay for my numerous medications, bone grafting surgery and expenses because of all of your support!!! I have 8 missing teeth right now, 7 that were removed from the past surgery and the rest are still broken, overlapped and crooked. I still suffer from nerve damage and pain but I have gone from having 0% feeling in my chin and bottom lip to about 55% which let me tell you is a huge difference. Still feels very strange and I'd definitely like a lot more feeling back, I might have to accept it as is but I still pray it will continue to heal. My oral team has sent in a funding application to pay for the rest of my teeth expenses because it will still be over $50,000. They believe I have a very good chance and so that is what we are praying for.  I honestly do not know what we will do if I don't get approved. The downside is the waiting period, the application was sent in this January and we will not hear back for at least 12 months. Upon (very hopeful!) approval I will then need braces for at least 24 months to fix the spacing issues, overlapped and crooked teeth I now have due to the accident. Not all my teeth will survive wearing the braces because of all the micro fractures still present in my teeth, once they start to move, those fractures will increase and those teeth will die. Thus, all implants will not be done until after the braces which means I will have the mouth I have now, broken and 8 missing teeth for at least another 3 years. That is definitely the most difficult and depressing part at this point. This means, I still can only eat soft foods and liquids for a very long time yet. I can assure you, it's getting very old. I have to wait another 3 years until I can chew properly, until I can have steak again, or almonds, or chips for goodness sakes ;) I don't feel comfortable smiling and I won't until my teeth are all there and fixed, I'm extremely self conscious now about something that I used to actually love about myself. I haven't been able to work yet because there was just no way I could realistically last 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. But on the other hand, I could be relearning how to walk right now instead of waiting to chew properly and so I need to keep that perspective. It is hard to main a positive outlook sometimes but I remind myself of all the hardships in the world or even another family with a sick child. I am on my way, I am getting healthier, I am getting more energy, I am finally starting to feel like myself again. I still have a very long road but I have come so far and am still so blessed. So I keep my mouth closed so no one can see, I could be paralyzed and yet I can walk and run and have no other body issues. I am a very lucky girl to have through this accident on the other side as healthy as I am. I could not have pushed through without all of your help, support and love! I am beyond grateful!!!
Thank you!!
Luisa Steen

Tragically my daughter Luisa was visiting  the United States as a Canadian resident; she tripped while crossing a balcony and took a horrible fall off  the second story balcony at her hotel.  The Hotel is assuming no liability for this unfortunate accident.

Unfortunately the fall has left her with a broken jaw, shattered the majority of all her molar teeth as well as shattered her chin leaving her with the need for a metal plate to replace the bone structure. All her molar teeth on both sides will need to be replaced and we are waiting for the jaw surgery to recover to proceed with final details. This will take a minimum of 6 weeks before  any dental work can be done.

Unfortunately Luisa has experienced a layoff this past year due to calagrys economic crisis and had no extra insurance or health benefits.

We are anticipating the medical expenses from the United States to be extremely high from the two day hospital stay as well as the ambulance ride; not to mention the dentistry to have the molars replaced here in Canada.

At this time we are grateful she did not break any other bones, her spine and neck have been cleared and she only is left with a lot of bruises and the above mentioned injuries. I am asking all of her friends and family to help her through this nightmare by sending positive thoughts and or contribute what you can towards her expenses.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

 Sincerely Luisa's mother Diana
