Vet Bills for Poisoned Puppy Banks

Donation protected

Asking for money is never a pleasant thing to do, but we need to help paying for our puppy Banks's vet bills that are treating him for poison.

BACKGROUND
On May 23, my sister's 1.5 year old Vizsla puppy, Banks, ate rat bait/poison that was negligently left around the condominium where we live.

About a month ago, I noticed a strange, green and Greenie-looking rectangular block against one of the condo walls near our unit. I only saw the block because my dog Lobo had sniffed it out, wanting to eat it. Unsure of what the block was, I threw it out, and thought nothing of it. Lots of dogs and cats live in the neighborhood (at least 10 in the condominium alone), so it's probably fine.

Another week after that, while walking Lobo around the condominium again (this time, on a different side), he found another one of these green blocks and started chewing it. I immediately removed the block from his mouth and scraped out as much of the stuff as I could, not knowing what it was and not wanting my dog to eat it. I threw it away again.

A few days later, my partner Patrick was walking Lobo, and again, he found another green block. This time, Patrick investigated what exactly the thing was, and he found out (and he called poison control center) that these blocks are rat poison. Specifically, these types of rat poison are meant to be strung up somewhere out of reach of pets, children, and other non-rat/mouse things. Even 1/10g could be fatal for a dog of Lobo's size (65lbs). Banks weighs 60lbs. So, someone is putting out these blocks of rat poison carelessly and is leaving them on the ground.

Angry and terrified, I called the property management company that manages the condominium on 5/17. I was informed that the HOA does not put out rat poison, and as such, there is nothing they can do unless we figure out who is putting out the poison. I was told that the board would be informed and would discuss this issue.

BANKS'S EXPERIENCE
Last night, Banks began vomiting and was having diarrhea. As soon as this began, we saw green chunks of rat poison in his vomit, and we took him to a 24hr emergency vet close by. We don't know what exactly is in the poison, but it's  either a coagulant (anti-blood clotting) and/or neurotoxin. Since we can't be sure, Banks is being "aggressively" treated for both poisons.

Luckily, Banks is a medium-sized dog and already began expelling the poison from his body, so he will probably live, though he is still at risk of seizures, muscle tremors, and neurological disorders. The long-term effects of this incident are still unknown.

Banks's vet bills are too much for us to afford. Our estimate ranges from $2,320.07-$2,668.08, which covers his hospitalization, treatment, diagnoses, and any other care he may need. We are simply not in a financial situation to afford his bills. I have filed a claim with my renter's insurance, but it will be a couple of days until I know if this would even be covered under my policy.

I called the condo property management company again today to let them know what has happened to Banks. Again, I was told that they weren't at fault, aren't willing to pay for security, and still don't know who is putting out the poison. The best they can do is send out a note in the dues bill asking people to stop. I don't imagine this will be very affective.

LIVING SITUATION
We've had many problems living in this condominium, and we would ideally like to move out, but our lease doesn't end until September 30 (e.g., Alana's car was broken into, then broken into and stolen, other friends' cars have been damaged/broken into while parked in the condominium, and so forth). On top of it, our landlord and the condominium are not at fault as per our lease agreement (and AZ privileges landlords over tenants) and are not willing to spend money to have someone remove all of the rat poison and investigate who is leaving it out. I met with an attorney regarding this whole situation and was informed that, unfortunately, our only options are to stay until our lease ends, find someone else to live there, or break our lease (pay 1 month + forfeit security deposit). As such, any additional funds will go toward our efforts to move out of this clearly unsafe condominium.

We truly thank you so incredibly much for any help and support, including sharing this post; this has been an incredibly difficult and unfortunate event. Banks is a very sweet, good boy, and he has promised me that he'll give you many puppy kisses when he's feeling better. Thank you.
