In July 2019 I was diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer,(Multiple Myeloma). I started weekly Chemotherapy treatments on Aug,7 th. 2019. I have had 20 treatments to date.
I am scheduled for surgery on Jan 13th 2020 to prepare me for more chemotherapy and a Stem Cell Transplant in January and February 2020.
I restart Chemotherapy with a mega treatment on Jan. 16th 2020. And 7 days of injections 3 times per day after that.
I will have at least 3 trips to Halifax NS. QE11 Cancer Center , one on Dec 13th 2019, Next one on Jan 26th 2020 for at least one week for outpatients treatments 4-5 hours daily for stem cell collection. On my 3rd trip to Halifax in Feb. 2020, for Stem Cell Transplant for up to 6 weeks. For this I will need to have a support person 24/ 7 . This will be in hospital and with some outpatients.
I will then have 3 months to 12 months of rebuilding my immune system as it will be totally wiped out.
The cost of travel and housing as well as the cost of boarding of our 2 dogs is staggering. We are older adults living on a fixed income. We both have some disabilities in mobility. My wife is a cancer survivor after going through stage 4 cancer 11 years ago.
