Med Student's Future Put on Hold

Donation protected
On Saturday, March 18th in the early morning hours, Barry Fayman’s future was put on hold. While spending two years in Grenada, a small Caribbean country just north of South America, Barry was studying to be become a physician. He grew up in New York with his loving parents, older brother and younger sister. His parents were Ukrainian immigrants who embraced the American dream and have made a life for themselves by starting a successful meat packaging business. While living in Grenada, Barry has successfully completed 4 terms of medical school and was rounding the corner of term 5 (his final term). Just as the finish line was coming into focus, everything changed. Barry was struck by a local bus while riding on a scooter to his friend’s house. While he lay unconscious on the pavement, campus security came to his aid. He was rushed to the local hospital. By the time Barry reached the hospital, he was conscious, but was not able to move or feel anything from the waist down.

Unfortunately, the health care system in Grenada has not yet advanced to the level of heath care in the United States. Barry was able to get an MRI and some very painful X-rays, but the hospital in Grenada did not have the capability to provide the emergency care that Barry needed. It was immediately apparent that Barry was going to need to be airlifted out of Grenada as soon as possible. With some help from loving family and caring friends, after almost 24 agonizing hours, Barry was put on a plane headed to Miami.

Barry arrived in Miami Sunday morning and was met by his family who immediately flew in from New York. He was sent straight into scans, testing and X-rays which resulted in a long, extensive list of injuries. Barry had a skull fracture, subarachnoid hemorrhage, C7 fracture, clavicle fracture, scapula fracture, rib fractures, pneumothorax and a triple column T8 fracture. He was rushed into a 5+ hour emergency spinal surgery (laminectomy and spinal fusion). He has since come out of surgery and is currently staying at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in the neurosurgery ICU. They have started physical therapy, but it is still too early to tell if he will ever regain feeling or movement from the waist down.

Barry now has a much different fight ahead of him. He won’t be celebrating the completion of his final term in Grenada this spring. He won’t be spending his summer studying all night to pass his Step 1. He won’t be preparing to start clinical rotations in the fall. He will be fighting to complete physical therapy. He will be fighting to regain movement in his legs. He will be fighting for a shot to finish medical school and continue in the path of becoming a physician. And through all these fights, the last thing he needs to worry about is bills to cover an accident that nobody saw coming.

We have started this fundraiser on Barry and his family’s behalf, because they are too reluctant to ask for help themselves. They have worked very hard and are unwilling to burden others. Therefore, we ask that you please donate to cover his expenses. We can help ease his mind and let him concentrate on the important fights. All proceeds will be donated directly to the Fayman family in this time of uncertainty and heartbreak. Barry has touched the lives of everyone he has met in Grenada and always been there to provide smiles and laughter to each and every person who has had the privilege of being part of his life. It’s our turn to be there for him.
