Haylee's Medical Fund

It all started in Kindergarten when we both walked into class. I said “Good Morning” and the class responded, but there was one little girl who was very quiet and shy. She wouldn’t say a word she just smiled. One of those smiles who lights up the entire room.

My name is Ms. Almeida (Bella) and Haylee is my 4th-grade student. Haylee is a smart, beautiful, strong and humble young girl from Dominican Republic. She loves math, enjoys modeling and helping others. She has a smile that would make anyone feel better.

Her smile was interrupted three weeks ago when she was feeling sick and went to the emergency room for a sore throat. She was told she had a virus and returned to school. As days passed Haylee felt worst and once again was taken back to the hospital. She was then diagnosed with Hepatitis A and was told that with medicine she would be “ok”. However, she wasn’t getting better doctors were saying “her white blood cells are not fighting, we need to do further testing”. On Thanksgiving Day I received the worst news anyone could ever receive “Haylee has Leukemia.” I didn’t know how to react; I sat in my living room thinking “why.” After an hour all I could think about was the family her mother, father, and sister. What will they do?

I went to see Haylee the next day and she was quiet and seemed worried. She wasn’t eating and was very distant. Many people asked her “Are you ok?” and she would say “yes.” I know “my Haylee” so I went up to her and held her hands and asked her: Haylee, in a complete sentence, tell me how do you feel? She held my hands and with tears in her eyes said “I am scared Ms. Almeida, what should I do?” taking a deep breath I responded; It’s ok to be scared, it's ok to feel confused, it's ok to let it out, talk to me. She said: “I know I have cancer in my blood but how am I going to fight this” After explaining and watching her cry. She asked me “Ms. Almeida who is going to take care of my family?” My mother cannot work, we have a little sister and my dad can’t work too hard because he wants to be here. I responded, “don’t worry we will find ways to help your family. Then she hugged me and repeated, “ I am scared.” I grabbed her little face and with tears in my eyes I said; Haylee, what does Ms. Almeida tell you all the time? She said, “I am smart, I am beautiful, I am good and I am strong,” I said, you are STRONG, you will make it, and I know you will. She said; “I promise you that I will fight, I will eat, I will be strong but can you promise me you will teach me and help me?” I said, YES.

I plan to keep my promise and help Haylee and her family. With the help of this and many other fundraisers the family will receive the help they need for expenses, services, treatments and anything they may need while Haylee fights.

Thank you for listening and your support.

LAST UPDATE (JANUARY/2017)
I would like to thank everyone for the support. Haylee is doing well and progressing in her journey. Haylee has been added as the beneficiary and her mother Damarys Castillo will be responsible of withdrawing the funds when the fundraiser ends. Haylee and her family thank you
