Save Scout

This is the story of our journey to Save Scout.

On Monday, December 11, 2017, we received the devastating news that our sweet Scout had Lymphoma. This was a huge surprise because up until this moment, Scout has been a healthy and happy boy.

Over the course of the week after diagnosis, we began to explore our options for Scout. We visited Charleston Veterinary Referral Clinic where we had to priviledge of meeting Dr. Jaclyn Renner. She is amazing and the most helpful, hands on veterinarian that you will EVER meet. Unfortunately, though, chemotherapy alone cannot cure our dog of Lymphoma and we were only looking at around 12-18 months with him. We just couldn't fathom only having another year with our precious boy. After beginning the chemotherapy treatments with Dr. Renner, we reached out to NC State's Dr. Suter who is performing Bone Marrow Transplants for dogs with Lymphoma. He has been curing dogs over the past few years. We learned from him that our best chance of curing Scout would come from a donation of stem cells from a family member.

Since Scout was literally born as a "throw away" dog, this was a very difficult feat but we have been able to locate a direct sister and are in the process of having her tested for the donation. This is a huge deal and offers us great hope.

Whether we find the donation of stem cells or not, Scout can still undergo the surgery. If a donor cannot be located, we will essentially try to clean Scout's own stem cells and reinsert them into the bone marrow with hopes of curing this horrible disease. This procedure is extremely expensive but we are dedicated to doing EVERYTHING that we can to save our boy.

The Chemo alone is projected to cost around $3000-$5000. The matching of stem cells alone costs somewhere in the range of $2000-$4000. The transplant procedure is around $17000 if all goes as planned. Then the T-cell therapy after the surgery costs $6700. This does not include the expense of driving back and forth to Raleigh, NC numerous times (an expense that we fully intend to pay ourselves). We are asking for your help to save Scout and let him enjoy a long and happy life with us.

If we raise more funds than we need, we will pass them along to another dog is the same boat as our Scout to help find more cures for this truly terrible disease.

Thank you so much. We are grateful for every single share and every single dollar.

Chris, Jess, Scout and family!
