I recently helped start the MBHS Engineering Club, which hopes to teach engineering through hands-on experience and build ties between Magnet and non-magnet students with unique and enjoyable learning experiences. I would like to offer interested students more opportunities to explore the field of engineering that are not offered by other clubs and classes through unique competitions.

The major competition we plan on participating in is the 2019 Solar Car Challenge, an international high school solar car racing competition. However, given the financially burdensome nature of this project, we must find various ways to raise funds. As we are a newly founded club, we have not participated in previous competitions and are not eligible for many grants, but we have applied to as many grants as possible, in hopes that we will be able to raise enough money to start construction soon. We have also conducted local bake sales to help cover costs of basic prototyping materials, but are still in need of major financial assistance. All money raised from donations will be used for materials such as solar panels, batteries, and transportation and storage expenses. Currently, we are the only solar car team in the Greater DC region, so donations will help us greatly in getting started, as well as help spur development and talk about green energies in the region, which may be especially important in the current day and age.

These products or services are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Montgomery County Board of Education, the superintendent of schools, or this school.
All donations go to the Montgomery Blair High School Engineering Club (Mr. John Kaluta).

Any amount of donation is highly appreciated, thank you so much in advance!

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, last night, while the car was being trailered, one of the back wheels fell off. This came after encountering severe issues with the motor. With all these setbacks coming at us right before the race is slated to start, we have concluded that it is unsafe for us to compete in this year's Solar Car Challenge.

Five of our team members will still be traveling to Texas to meet with solar car teams from around the world, learning and acquiring useful advice from those competing this year.

With our newfound knowledge, we will focus on making sure our car, The Argo, is ready for the 2019 Solar Car Challenge at the Texas Motor Speedway. Before then, we plan to make major modifications and improvements to the car.

As always, a huge thank you goes out to everybody who has supported us in our extremely ambitious endeavor to compete in the Solar Car Challenge. Know that all of your support has carried us through all the long work days and the setbacks.

Hey everyone,

It's hard to believe we're less than one month away from the start of the race!

Thanks to everyone's generosity, we've been able to order most major components of the car. Recently, we've been working on the solar panel roof, brakes, and motor mount. Also, we're thrilled to announce that we've recently welcomed new members to our team.

We've made incredible progress the past few weeks, and are excited to see what we can produce in this final stretch before the competition begins.

As always, we would greatly appreciate any financial support you can offer, as we are still in need of funds to cover the costs of additional supplies and travel expenses. Please consider sharing our GoFundMe link (bit.ly/blairsolarcar) on social media and with your family, friends, and colleagues. Thanks for your continued support of our ambitious project!

Hello everyone,

The car is close to completion! Two weeks ago, we displayed the car at the Kensington Car Show. We have been to working to strengthen welds and build the brake pedal.

We have received a match offer from the Solar Car Challenge Foundation. If we raise $2,500, they will contribute the same amount! Please spread the word about our project so that we can receive this support.

Also, we have now partnered with Difference Makers, a 501(c)(3) organization. This means that donations can now be made tax-deductible. Send them a check mentioning the MBHS Engineering Club at http://www.difference-makers.org/about-us/contact-us/.

Thank you so much for everything you've done for us—it's helped us come this far! We are close to our goal now and need only a little bit more support from you.

Sincerely,
MBHS Engineering Club

Hey everyone,

We've recently finished tack welding supports to the front end of the car, and now it's stable enough to roll with a passenger! We've included a short video of the car rolling with this update. Meanwhile, we'll keep working on back suspension and brake designs while testing a donated motor (though we're looking for better options).

Once again, thank you for all the support, and continue to spread this gofundme if you can!
