AFRICA BRASS AMBASSADORS!
Mbale Schools Band is the most widely-seen and popular brass band in the world on Facebook.
As it always has been, our main goal is to support children in their education by trying to find sponsors who are willing to help them to meet the costs of their school fees, books, etc. But we have also tried to show the world that young Africans can play brass music to a high standard even though it is obviously not in our culture or tradition.
After some consideration, we are pleased to announce a new strategy for Mbale Schools Band that may encourage brass music across the African continent. During our tour to Kenya earlier this year we were overwhelmed at the enthusiastic reception that we received from our school audiences in Nairobi. We thought: how can we share our success elsewhere in Africa?
We believe that the best way to encourage youth music in Africa is be role models that other African children may feel inspired by. If we can do it, why can’t they? We will, of course, be performing African music and dance as well as brass pieces so that we appeal to a wide audience, and to make sure that we don’t forget our own African roots.
So we have set ourselves an objective of taking the band to play in every country in Africa where there is an interest and it’s safe to do so. If they appreciate us in Kenya why wouldn’t they in other countries! This is obviously a long term project and will take some years.
Initially, we will aim for at least one country a year, or perhaps two if we can afford it. And we have to be careful not to disrupt the children’s education so we can only travel in the school holidays.
Although we are a self-sustainable band in terms of our day-to-day running costs, we do need help from the public for special projects like international tours to promote brass music..
In January 2019 we will travel to Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Please support us to encourage youth music in Africa!
