Help Maverick Walk Again

On July 4, 2019, at 9:15 PM, our four-month-old German Shepherd puppy was startled by a firecracker and escaped our yard. Despite numerous attempts to locate him via search parties, fliers, posters, numerous social media posts, trips to the animal shelter, and paid services that contact vets and neighbors, he was missing for 14 days.
Until, someone spotted him in a parking lot, contacted us via the phone number on the poster, and returned him to us on July 16, 2019. Though he was limping on the front back paws of his left side, Maverick was ecstatic to be home, and we were over the moon.
What we didn’t know was the cause of the limping, which was discovered on July 17, 2019 after a trip to Pooler Veterinary Hospital and a referral to Veterinary Specialists of the Southeast: Maverick appears to have been hit by a car at some point in the time he was missing, which led to a complete fracture of his femur bone and significant damage to the growth plate in his front left paw.
The good news is that Maverick’s fracture seems to be on a good path to healing, which will be augmented by physical therapy, but his growth plate requires surgery to repair. The full cost of his treatment, which includes diagnostics, surgery for the growth plate repair and the removal of a portion of his ulna, all medications, and 4 weeks of in-patient physical therapy for both injuries is $5,800.
This is why we are asking for your help. We are new pet parents just trying to do our best, and you can’t foresee something like this. Ever. We will, of course, acquire provisions for his future medical care, but for now, this is where we are.
Brandi and I are good people who are trying our best. We purchased a home at the beginning of the year in hopes of filling it with foster children and our own pets, including Maverick. We are currently going through a foster parent certification in hopes of offering a warm, loving place for a child in the system, and this unexpected expense to our home will delay our dream of opening our home to children in need.
