Help Matis Recover from Flesh-Eating Disease
We are reaching out to the community to help our family through the most difficult time of our lives.
My perfectly healthy son Matis, active 9 years old, one of six siblings, has been infected with a rare bacterial infection, which almost ended his life. We already lost a kid, and it is terrifying to think about what the outcome of this infection could be. Matis has been hospitalized for the past six weeks and is currently in Edmonton childrens hospital. In just 6 weeks, he has endured NINE surgeries … with more to go. To stop the rapidly spreading infection, surgeons removed flesh on his left foot, both arms and his right knee. Our family has been impacted emotionally by this ordeal, and the financial strain is only adding to it. Our family is established in the town of Westlock and the travel to the hospital is extremely costly. We are grateful for any contributions you can make, no matter how small, to help us through this challenging time. As parents we had to quit work to take care of our son and be beside him. We haven’t received any financial support other than this Go fund me and the help of our son’s school located in Legal. We are extremely grateful of their help and support, but this isn’t enough at this point. We are an extremely private family and we would not ask help if it we did not need it. We have 3 other kids at home to take care of.

What is Necrotizing Fasciitis

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death. Accurate diagnosis, rapid antibiotic treatment, and prompt surgery are important to stopping this infection. Necrotizing fasciitis can lead to sepsis, shock, and organ failure. It can also result in life-long complications from loss of limbs or severe scarring due to surgically removing infected tissue. Even with treatment, up to 1 in 3 people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection.

Matis’s Story

Matis is a 9-year old boy in grade 3. He is a very active boy who has a passion for the outdoors. An outstanding brother of 4 sibling, son and a friend of so many.
In late April 2019, we thought as parents that he had the Flu, like all the family members. He spent ten days in bed missing school with very intense flu-like symptoms. He was extremely tired and was vomiting. He was also complaining about pain in his left foot, which we thought was from muscles aching related to the flu. Matis, who is rarely sick was so ill we decided to the go to ER in Westlock, they took a swab and send us home, it took 31 hours to receive the results. Enough time then that the next morning is foot was the size of a watermelon. We were immediately back at the ER. After multiple various tests, Matis was transferred to another hospital and admitted into the Medical ICU. At that point, they still had not confirmed the cause of his illness. While changing into his hospital gown, it was apparent that the pain in his left foot seem to be worse. The surgeon performed debridement, which means to remove the infected tissue in this foot. All things considered; the surgery went as well as could be expected. The surgeon debrided the infected skin and fascia tissue. Unfortunately, the infection spread into more locations in his body, both arms and right knee.

Matis was kept intubated on a ventilator and sedated post-surgery, so he was unaware of the trauma that awaited him. Matis was supposed to go to a rehabilitation center after his last treatment of medication on June 5, however he keeps complaining of pain in his lower back and hip. The specialist performed another MRI and found liquid and infection in is hips. On June 7, Matis was still on bed rest and couldn’t stand to walk. He will have to remain at the hospital for another set of medication, 6 more weeks. We are still waiting for the biopsy and the results, we are praying. As parents it is devastating, and we feel completely out of control. We would like to take all the pain away for him and let him run and play. Matis should be enjoying playing outside and running with is friends instead of being in a hospital bed. He is extremely resilient and understands that his life will never be the same, but we can see the fear in his eyes. He is scared to died, this is so hard as a mom, no words can describe my feelings.

How You Can Help

Now Matis, our beloved son, has a long road ahead of him to be able to resume any sense of normalcy in his life. Knowing how strong and determined he is, we know he will not stop rehabilitation until he’s able to climb mountains again.

We are fortunate to have medical insurance in Canada, which has helped us. Matis faces more surgeries and physical therapy. Please consider contributing to our family and sharing this story with your friends and family. No amount is too small to help us as he recovers from this terrible illness. We will update this space as he undergoes more surgeries.
