Help me finish my thesis in Lisbon!

Help send me to study in Lisbon this summer!

I was a semifinalist in the 2016 Disquiet International Literary Prize, which brings some of the world's most talented young writers together in Lisbon, Portugal each year to work with local Portuguese writers as well as world-famous writers.

The program is founded on the following principles: That the conversations and exchange of ideas that result from meeting writers from around the world pushes one’s own work beyond the boundaries of the self. That all writers need a community to support and sustain them. That stepping out of the routine of one’s daily life and into a vibrant, rich, and new cultural space unsettles the imagination, loosens a writer’s reflexes.

This year, writing faculty will include Denis Johnson. While I know I'm not alone in this sentiment, I credit Denis Johnson as being one of the most influential figures in my writing style, with Jesus' Son being on an absolute pedestal. Denis Johnson is known for not making many public appearances, and chances to work with him don't come often.  This is possibly, actually once-in-a-lifetime.

The semifinalist prize offers a $500 scholarship to the 2-week intensive writing program in Lisbon. But that is stacked against:

+$1950 program cost
+$850 airfare
+$700 hostel accommodations

With the $500 scholarship, that still leaves me short $3000. Any support you could offer to send me to Lisbon from July 3 - July 15, 2016 would mean the world.

While in Lisbon, I hope to not only meet & work with world-renowned faculty, but also hope to make some much needed progress on my thesis. My thesis is a 200-300 page memoir about how the definition of family morphs when family members die, how things like poverty and substance abuse affect a family, how we choose to grieve, and how that identity of "family" acts as a life source. It looks at whether we, as individuals, can escape a path that was set for us ahead of time. This thesis has to be turned in by August for me to graduate my MFA program at Columbia, so these two weeks to write will be very much needed!
