MARX @ 200: THE MARXIST MOVIE SERIES

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth the L.A. Workers Center is co-presenting a Marxist Movie Series throughout 2018. This Karl Marx Bicentennial Cinema Series will screen films by and/or about Marxists in order to stimulate discourse about important historical figures on the Left and topics such as: class struggle; racism; gay rights; fascism; feminism; religion; etc.
The movies in this multi-cultural cinema series will be introduced by film historian/critic Ed Rampell, who co-presented “TEN FILMS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, A Cinematic Centennial Celebration of the Russian Revolution” in 2017 at the L.A. Workers Center. Rampell wrote and co-organized the 70th Anniversary Hollywood Blacklist Commemoration at the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills in October 2017. He is the author of "Progressive Hollywood, A People’s Film History of the United States" and co-author of three other movie history books, including "The Hawaii Movie and Television Book" (the third edition has just been published).
The films in the Marxist Movie Series will be screened at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at the L.A. Workers Center. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A. Refreshments will be served. Donations of $10 will be requested. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The first film of the Marxist Movie Series is Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck’s 2018 biopic "The Young Karl Marx", starring August Diehl as Marx, Stefan Konarske as Friedrich Engels, Hannah Steele as Mary Burns and Daniel Day-Lewis’ "Phantom Thread" co-star Vicky Krieps as Karl’s wife, Jenny Marx. Peck’s biopic portrays the friendship between Marx and Engels and their romances as they participate in the 1840s revolutionary movements, leading up to a startling, poetic visualization of "The Communist Manifesto." Raoul Peck also directed the Academy Award nominated James Baldwin documentary "I Am Not Your Negro" and the 2000 feature "Lumumba", about the Congolese liberation leader.

In Dubious Battle - More militant than and written before "The Grapes of Wrath", John Steinbeck depicted a bitter Red-led strike in California’s orchards in his 1936 novel. James Franco stars in and directed this neglected 2016 gem with Selena Gomez, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston, Vincent D’Onofrio. - 7:00 p.m. p.m., Oct. 25.
Rosa Luxemburg - German writer/director Margarethe von Trotta’s 1986 biopic about the Spartacus League’s great female leader, played by Barbara Sukowa. Commemorate the 100th anniversary of the November 1918 German workers’ uprising. - 7:00 p.m. p.m., Nov. 29, 2018.
The Gospel According to St. Matthew - Gay Italian Communist Party member Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1964 movie uses a “you are there” documentary style to depict a liberation theology Jesus of Nazareth. Nominated for three Oscars, this is the perfect picture for celebrating Christmas! - 7:00 p.m. p.m., Dec. 27.
