Marlo in Antarctica for Science

I am so very thrilled that I have been invited to join a scientific research expedition to Antarctica! My long-held dream is coming true at last. During our 7-week cruise from Antarctica through the Ross Sea and into the Southern Ocean, my role is Science Communication and Outreach.

Our research will help us better understand what factors affect the absorption of carbon dioxide by microscopic plants called diatoms, which have produced the oxygen in every second breath you take. As the base of the marine and aquatic food chains, diatoms also feed the oceans. This research has implications for better understanding how the concentration of carbon dioxide—a major greenhouse gas—has changed in the past, with important implications for our planet’s future.

We fly to McMurdo Station on Antartica on January 22nd. We are VERY happy to answer questions about our work and science, life aboard a research vessel and icebreaker, and anything else! All schools and individuals are invited to follow our trip and engage with us at  www.snowbirdstransect.org

I’m also working on two books for children about science and the environment in Antarctica, and my personal goal is to share this journey and what I learn along the way with as many people—especially young people—as possible.
