Help a Junior Stay On Track to Graduate!

Hello my name is Marissa Amara, I am a Junior Political Science Major, Legal Communications Minor from Fontana, California. I transferred to Howard University in the Spring 2017 from Chaffey Community College in Rancho Cucamonga, California. This semester I took out Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans totaling $5,250 which is the maximum I was allowed, now I owe $13,920. Financially I have struggled through college, I am a first generation American college student and the first in my family to attend a four-year institution. While attending Community College I was able to pay school tuition and textbooks through working minimum wage jobs, with hard work and diligent effort I was able to finish community college within a year and a half before transferring to Howard University in January 2017. With little prior knowledge from myself or my family about the true cost of college I found myself in a terrible situation of not knowing how I am going to pay for school, currently I am more than halfway done with my education and all my credits have transferred but for the second time I find myself wondering how I am going to pay off my balance. My parents were not approved for the Parent Plus loan again due to our home foreclosure and my father is currently the only working parent as my mother aids for my brother who has struggles with his mental health. I was able to aid the cost of Spring 2017 semester by using my Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans from Fall 2016 because I wasn’t a student at Howard yet it was part of my package for the year, and I was awarded a grant of three thousand dollars from the school. However, for the Fall 2017 semester I currently don’t have any grants or scholarships which leaves my balance to be paid by myself.

I am a Junior Political Science Major, Legal Communications Minor, member of Howard University Showtime Marching Band serving as auxiliary, African Students Association, Debate Team and I am on the E-Board for the Pre-Law Society. I am looking to take on an internship and expand my involvement while in DC in the coming months. For my family I am the last hope for our family legacy to continue, my mother has sleepless nights worrying about finances. I always remind her that I am on track to graduate and I will be done with the stress of tuition after: Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Summer 2018, Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. With just four semesters and one summer session I will have obtained in bachelors in Political Science. Upon completion of my degree I will take a gap year to become financially stable before attending law school in hopes of becoming a defense attorney specializing in criminal law, especially for minorities. Also since I am from California I have hopes of entering the entertainment industry. I hope my story will touch your heart to bless me in my pursuit of higher education.
