Marie is an incredible woman. She is a Mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to so many of us.
She is also a tireless community volunteer primarily involved in providing support for intellectually challenged adults. She has been involved with Reach for the Sky and currently volunteers at The Mission Thrift Store and the Italian Handicapable Association here in Windsor.
For the past three years Marie has been in a fight for her life. In early 2016 she underwent major surgery. When all was said and done, she was diagnosed with liver and colon cancer. Since then she has undergone aggressive treatment in a clinical trial at London Health Sciences Center. Marie has fought this battle with everything she has. Where many of us would have collapsed under the weight of this all – Marie went to work each day, continued to volunteer, embraced her family and friends and all that life has to give. I suspect that many of you who have been in her company during this time are shocked to hear this.
A December 2018 CT scan indicated that her cancer markers were up. A need for far more aggressive treatment is needed. An additional drug must be added to Marie’s chemotherapy regimen. One of the chemotherapy drugs will not be covered by OHIP. Marie's oncologist feels strongly that a combination of two drugs are required and will prolong Marie’s life and the quality of the life she lives.
One of these key drugs, is not covered by OHIP or by any other means. The cost of the drug is prohibitive and ranges from approximately $4,000 to $4,500 per treatment to be administered by IV every three weeks. As you can see saving the life of someone we love has become very expensive. In addition to this Marie may be unable to work at some time in the course of her treatment.
A scan being performed on January 30 will determine what dose is needed to get Marie through this. Treatment is scheduled to begin on February 4, 2019.
We are forever grateful for any contribution. We are hopeful that we can relieve Marie of the financial burden involved and allow her to concentrate on her health and well-being.
