Maribel's Blanding's Turtle Project
Donación protegida
If you know Mrs. Pregnall, you know about the turtles.
In 2010, Maribel Pregnall adopted the blanding's' turtle conservation project from Hudsonia. Initially, it was a solo mission: After teaching a full day of classes, Maribel would go into the wetlands to check the traps, track turtles all night, sleep in her classroom, and wake up the next morning to teach again. This was her schedule almost every day from mid May until early July.
After the first year, her husband, Marshall Pregnall, took over the project. As a professor at Vassar College, he was able to secure funding from Vassar to continue the research in the wetlands behind the high school through Vassar's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI).
However, after his passing in November, Maribel is now conducting turtle-business as usual, but with a tighter budget, and the equipment needed-- transmitters for tracking turtles, turtle identification tags, gardening stakes, sardines, etc.-- still isn't free.
In honor of teacher appreciation week, GoFundMe.com will be awarding $1,000 to one hundred teachers whose students raise $500 by May 18, 2017. Due to the fact that all the expenses are coming from out-of-pocket this year any donation would be greatly appreciated.
