Formed in August 2016, Mariachi Femenil Detroit sought to uncover the hidden female talents of the Southwest Detroit community - a primarily Latino populated area. Since then, the group has recruited two extraordinarily talented female musicians just as eager and impassioned to continue recruiting for more members to join the “Project Femenil” movement. By creating and performing musical literatures, Mariachi Femenil Detroit helps give a voice to female artists of all ages while fusing musical and leadership development with cultural education and empowerment. Located at Plaza del Sol in Southwest Detroit, a community center for performing arts, MFD has collaborated with several community organizations to bring local performances and service events to the State of Michigan and especially the Southwest population.
Last November, Mariachi Femenil Detroit was a grant recipient of the Knight Arts Challenge through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Part of our commitment to the Knight Foundation is raising a total of $7,500 by October 2018 and giving back to our hometown, Southwest Detroit. The funds raised will go towards supporting our own community events, volunteering performances for other Detroit events, and to continue and expand our free, mariachi instruction to women in Southwest Detroit.
We made a promise to build the first female mariachi in the city of Detroit, and since then have been successfully developing our abilities and bringing the beautiful culture of Mexico to people through the rhythms and sounds of mariachi music.
