Mango Marley's Hurricane Relief

$2,095 of $50,000 goal

Created October 31, 2018
Hurricane Michael hit land on Mexico Beach, FL October 10, 2018. This category 4 (almost 5) hurricane completely devastated this small beach town that we call home. It has been estimated that over 70% of the homes and businesses in Mexico Beach are gone. Untold numbers of residents and vacationers have lost their homes. The businesses that built this town lay in piles of rubble. Mango Marley’s is one of the lucky remaining structures in Mexico Beach, but we are far from operable. To open our doors and provide our employees with a job we will need a 3,000 square foot roof and new HV/AC units. The estimated cost of this project is $50,000.

Cathy & Steve Johnson opened Mango Marley’s in July of 2007, and it instantly became the coolest place on Mexico Beach. For eleven years frequenters of the forgotten coast have brought their children and grand-children to Mango Marley’s as part of their vacation tradition. We have hosted weddings, family reunions, birthday parties, and even military send-offs. We desire to fire up the kitchen and create that comfort zone our patrons have grown to love. Mango Marley’s will be a place of rest for the tireless construction crews and full-time residents who are rebuilding this town. Mango Marley’s will be a job for our employees who need to provide for their families. Most importantly, Mango Marley’s will kick-start the economy of Mexico Beach once again. Please join us in our efforts to breathe new life into this town and rebuild our seaside home.

Hello everyone. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Year. As we all say good bye to 2018 and hello to 2019 we would like to say thank you. Thank you to all of our loyal customers and fans who have called, sent messages of care and encouragement, those who have come out to help us get Mangos Outpost up and running. We have been able to get 5 of our employees back working & those of you who have come out to the food truck aka “Mango’s Outpost” you know how much work and goodness they are cooking up.
We have finally started on the building- praise the Lord!!!’ The rain has stopped for a minute so the roofers were able to start on the roof yesterday. Hoping by the end of the week the building will be finally rain free! Steve and I started on the inside last week with the help from Super Dave. We are having to pull the beautiful tongue and grove wood ceiling out due to water damaged. But have found we have some awesome looking ceiling rafters and plan to clean them up and leave them exposed. Steve found him a treasure while tearing out the ceiling and we will definitely find a special place for it when Mangos gets back open. Work is starting and that gets us all excited. Figures crossed we can be back open by summer. Mexico Beach as a whole is moving forward putting the pieces back together. We are all just having to do it one piece at a time.
Happy New Year!
Cathy

Hello all- We have been super busy this past month. First, thank you to all who have donated. We really appreciate it. Mango’s will be back, it is just going to be a slow process. We have cleared the back yard behind Mango’s were the storm crushed everything. We have met with a mechanical engineer about getting a new hood system for the kitchen. We have finally got our permit from the city to begin rebuilding and fingers crossed the roofer will be able to start on the roof this week if it stops raining. It is crazy how much it has rained since Hurricane Michael. The day after the Hurricane the inside of Mango’s looked like we were ready to open. But with us not having a roof, it is not as pretty inside anymore. There is a lot of work to do but we are working every day to get things put back together. Today we opened Mango’s Outpost in front of the building. We are serving out of a food truck and have set up a tent for seating. We have been able to get 3 of our employees back to work and hope to be able to add more soon. Please continue to keep Mango's and Mexico Beach in your thoughts and prayers. Mexico Beach will come back from this but there is a lot of work ahead of all of us down here. Thank you again.
