Help Finish a 'World' Bangka (Canoe)

You’re invited to help us complete a 'World' Bangka (Canoe) ~ gifted to the Filipino American community in Northern California. In the process, connect with the seafaring ways and history of our people.

Join Balik sa Dagat Bangka Journey to Help Finish a ’World’ Bangka: September 8-13, 2017 in Glen Ellen, California (~1 hour north of San Francisco - Bay Area).

It was through an invitation to the Swinomish Tribal Canoe Journey 2011 that let this dream guided project to meet with Coast Salish Native American Elder Philip H. Red Eagle, one of the co-founders of the Pacific Northwest Tribal Canoe Journey, with the catalytic question:  “Where is the Filipino Canoe?” to vision holder, Mylene 'Leng Leng' Amoguis Cahambing. Learn more about how it started and the people involved.

A large 22+ foot long red western cedar log, the 'World' canoe's initial carving was done by Hupa-Yurok George ‘Porty’ Blake in March 2012, with many students from SFSU and via The Cultural Conservancy. Through Pomo-Bisayan descent Alexis Canillo and L Frank Manriquez, a Tongva-Acjachemen artist, writer, tribal scholar, cartoonist, and indigenous language activist, our first carving session occurred in the winter of December 2012 with Coast Salish Master Carver Philip H. Red Eagle with initial volunteer carvers-to-be. Mentored and guided in Coast Salish canoe building by Uncle Philip, an all volunteer-run project and its supporters have persevered.  (See Update #1 for more info on BSDBJ: About Us ).

The 'World' Bangka has its own beauty and strength yet to unfold. Balik sa Dagat Bangka Journey's goal is to fulfill a dream of peace and connection.

Join us from September 8th - 13th as Ifugaw Master Carver Mamerto Lagitan Tindongan returns to complete the 'World' Bangka. Mamerto Lagitan Tindongan is a Mumbaki (shaman) and a Master Carver from the Ifugaw tribe in the Northern Philippines.

It is a wonderful honor that Lagitan has stepped in for the past 3 years to lend his support and mastery of wood carving to help shape the Bangka.

It is now time to complete the 'World' Bangka so it may be launched into the waters of the San Francisco Bay.

The call is being made to all interested in woodcarving, canoe building, paddle making and learning about 'Filipino' culture and ancestral seafaring traditions.

We are raising funds to cover the costs of transporting and hosting Lagitan in the Bay Area from Ohio. All donations of money and time are graciously received.
Balik sa Dagat Bangka Journey is fiscally sponsored by MONSOON.  Donations are tax deductible.

From September 8th - 13th, we welcome community to help and support the completion of the Bangka in Glen Ellen, California located in a private artist residence. Limited camping space is available on-site - RSVP for details via info below. Day visitors are welcome.
