Two years ago, I was working as a therapist and mindfulness teacher when a sudden diagnosis of eplilepsy changed everything about my life. My brain changed. My body/abilities changed. My lifestyle changed. My worldview changed. Most importantly, the scope and content of my photography transformed from a hobby to full blown second career.
This year I have been invited to travel internationally to tell my story and present my work, hopefully inspiring other artists with disabilities to do the same.
This campaign will help produce a multi-city, international tour of speaking engagements and shows by yours truly, first in mid March at the Visual Studies Conference "Hiding in Plain Site," followed by an invitation to the University of Hilo for the Graduate Philosophy Conference, an international conference in Durban, South Africa, and finally to Amsterdam, Netherlands in mid July to present at the 10th Annual Summer School on Black Europe Interrogating Citizenship, Race and Ethnic Relations.
My photography focuses on urban life in the 21st century. I examine spacial poetics, racialized space and the influence that space and architecture have on the human psyche. I have been lucky enough to show my work in exhibitions, galleries, conferences and publications around the world.
My intention is to help inspire other folks with disabilities to persevere and find transformation through art practice.
But I'll need your help to make it a reality! Here's the scoop:
-your donation will help fund flight, hotel, transportation, food, and the occasional sweet treat on the road from the Bay Area to Amsterdam
-all funders will receive a signed, black and white canvas print from my catalogue
