Malaga Island Memorial

Donation protected
From the 1860s until 1912, a community of laborers and fisherman lived on Malaga Island, off the coast of Phippsburg. A controversial community for its time, white and black residents married and lived together on the small island, until the state of Maine evicted them in 1912. Included in the eviction was the state's removal of the island cemetery, and they grossly consolidated the remains from 2-5 per coffin. The coffins were  buried on the grounds of the Maine School for the Feeble Minded, where some island residents were committed.

The state of Maine has provided us with partial funding to build a memorial to those community members exhumed from the Malaga Island Cemetery and those who died at the school as patients.  In order to complete the creation, installation as well as to provide maintenance and care in perpetuity, additional funds are needed.

As you can imagine, this event had a lasting and negative impact on our families. This monument will provide healing and closure. Acknowledging our family members and providing dignity at their burial site is meaningful and empowering in the way we will tell our story to future generations.

Our families will be eternally grateful for any contribution to help us bring closure to this horrific treatment of our love ones.

In order to plan for the dedication of this memorial on the anniversary of the eviction, we need to have all the funding secured by October 1st.
