On June 4th, 2016, Lexi Bruno and Erin Denny will depart Duluth, MN to circumnavigate Lake Superior via sea kayak. The trip will follow 1,200 miles of ever changing shoreline and take roughly 90 days. By embarking on this journey we are fulfilling our dreams and conquering our fears as well as inviting and encouraging women to do the same.
We are both recent graduates from the University of Minnesota Duluth, with degrees in Environmental and Outdoor Education. During our time as students, we worked as sea kayak guides on Lake Superior, and after our last trip we realized that we did not want it to end there. We could think of no better way to honor our love of the lake than by exploring its every corner. While exploration is a priority, we also want Make Waves to be about more than the miles. With this goal in mind, we will be stopping at different towns around the lake to spread our message: inspiring adventure in women, be the change, make waves.
The past year has been dedicated to saving up for this trip, but some items are still out of our reach. Our biggest expense is safety equipment. One item that is essential to our trip is the DeLorme inReach , which will allow us to navigate, transmit our location and send messages in places without cell service. Another item that we will not hit the water without is a VHF radio . A VHF is essential to any marine travel, it allows us to communicate with other vessels, get a current weather forecast and communicate with emergency response. These are only two of many items that will help make our journey safe.
On top of the safety equipment, a trip like Make Waves requires many small items that add up quickly. If you would like to help us pursue our dream of empowering women, your contribution would be greatly appreciated, every little bit helps. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
