Make Jeanne Miss Guinea 2017

Hi, my name is Jeanne Dore. I am a senior at the University of Washington; my majors are English and International Studies. I am running for Miss Guinea USA 2017. I chose to run for Miss Guinea USA because I come from the lower region of Guinea, which is often underrepresented. My region is called Nzerekore; it is also referred to as “La Foret” meaning forest in French. The purpose of my GoFundMe is to obtain sufficient funds to go to New York city in December, where the pageant will take place. As Miss Guinea USA 2017, my goal is to decrease child labor and eventually help fund a program that would enforce Child Labor laws in Guinea. I started out by making my project about building schools and started a study abroad program in Guinea, which are still part of my set of goals. However, I realized building schools won’t be beneficial for children in Guinea if they’re unable to attend them.

In 2016, the United States Department of Labor concluded that at least 1,152,064 children between the ages 5-14, were in the workforce. This means that a large number of children do not have access to school because they have to work instead. To make matters worse, these children are working at least 10 hours per day seven days a week in mining, agricultural, fishing industries and domestic sectors. These jobs requires children to work under dangerous conditions for little to nothing in return. Many children whose family depend on subsistence farming  are required to work in order to support their family needs to increase a surplus in goods for trade and/or bartering. Sometimes, they are also sent away from their family to work as domestic workers.

Although, the Guinean Constitution R190 law, forbids employment of children under 18 in dangerous labor forces the law is not adequately enforced. There are many laws and programs set in place to end child labor in Guinea, but the problem is majority of them are under-funded or simply not enforced. My plan is to start non-profit organisation in the US that will pattern with the Education Sector Program department. Together, I believe we could raise enough money to increase the number of labor inspectors and provide support and resources to victims of child labor. The program would donate money to farmers, fisherman, and other industries that hire those children for their lost in wages based on the children’s salary. In return, those industries would be able to hire adults age 18 and up to work for them instead of kids. As a result, children will have the opportunity to have access to education and it will increase the number of jobs available for their parents and other citizens.
