Make Dakota Ride Again!

On the evening of July 12th, Dakota was riding his dirt bike and took a spill. After he was rushed to the hospital with extreme pain in his knee and shin, he was given very bad news.

He has fractured his tibial plateau and splintered his tibia about two thirds of the way down. This is known as a complex fracture. The location of the fracture means he will not be able to put weight on his right leg for at least 3 months.

He has had one surgery (July 13th) to place an external fixator to stabilize the fracture. Before his first surgery Dakota developed compartment syndrome (pressure within the muscles at a dangerous level) in his lower leg and during the surgery the doctor had to perform a fasciotomy on each side of his leg. A fasciotomy is when an incision is made to relieve the pressure from the swelling.

On Monday July 15th, he was taken for a second surgery to attempt to close the fasciotomies. The doctor was able to close one side during that surgery but will not attempt to close the other side until the swelling goes down. He will try again on Monday July 22nd. Sometime within the next two weeks he will need to make at least one trip to MU Hospital in Columbia for a surgery to repair the fracture. He will stay at least two nights for his surgery at MU.

Dakota is a very active person. He enjoys skateboarding, riding dirt bikes of various sizes, fishing, kayaking, camping, and working on cars. He is always on the go, always finding something to do with his friends. For work he hangs cabinets, doors, and trim for new construction in the 4-state area. He enjoys his job and is not looking forward to the forced time off.

Unfortunately, Dakota has no health insurance and will not be able to work for 4-6 months. He has already spent 5 nights in the hospital and has at least two more nights after his surgery to repair the fracture. Medical expenses will continue to pile up after at least 4 surgeries and months of physical therapy and in-home healthcare.  Any funds raised will go toward medical expenses, travel expenses to and from Columbia, MO, and any monthly expenses that will continue to pile up between now and when he is able to work again.

We truly appreciate any donation you are able to make toward his recovery. We will continue to post frequent updates until he is back on his feet and has 100% mobility in his leg.

If you would like to help in other ways, feel free to visit Dakota at his home over the next few months. He won’t be able to get out and about nearly as much as he would like and is bound to get restless while bed ridden. Visitors will keep his spirits high and his mind off of his leg.

Thank you all so much for your continued love, support and most of all PRAYERS!

Let’s make Dakota ride again!
