Maiolino (Smith) Medical fund

On behalf of the Maiolino family we are writing to ask for your help.

Peter Maiolino was diagnosed with Chronic Lucidic Leukemia (C.L.L.), with a chromosome 17 depletion, which in short just adds extensive complications to his Leukemia. Peter’s health rapidly declined.
Within 3 months of his diagnosis he has become 100 % disabled. He has had many complications, such as an enlarged spleen, his lungs filling up with fluids, malnutrition, breathing difficulty, pneumonia, kidney problems/ dialysis, and liver damage.
And if that in itself isn’t more than anyone should have to deal with Peter was also diagnosed with prostate cancer prior to his Leukemia diagnosis.

The cancer medication that Peter is on for this rare type of Leukemia was just approved 10 months ago by the FDA and only tested on a few hundred patients during clinical trials. I only mention this to convey how critical his situation is and how limited his treatment options are.

Peter had no health issues whatsoever prior to this and was looking forward to his retirement years. Peter worked seven days a week for many years providing for his family.

Unfortunately Peter needed full time care shortly after his diagnosis. Ellisa, his wife is his caretaker at this point.

One year ago Ellisa herself was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to leave her own full-time employment in order to undergo a mastectomy, followed by reconstruction surgery and then treatment. She was then diagnosed with a giant liver hemangioma, which will need complicated surgery as well. She has had to put her own surgery on hold in order to care for her husband Peter.

Peter has been hospitalized for over a month now  at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston ) - with  his health continuing to decline.

Peter and Ellisa have two college age children – Alexandra and Michael.

As you can imagine, with both parents unable to work, finances and medical debt continues to escalate. And this is the last thing that this family needs to be worried about right now.

I am starting this fund in the hopes of helping them during this difficult time.

We thank you in advance for caring.
