Maintaining Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke

Donation protected
Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke (“In Working, One Learns”)
is an award-winning construction skills training program for at-risk youth in Hana, Maui—an isolated community on the island’s east coast with over two-thirds its population of Native Hawaiian ancestry.

Our approach is to teach academic subjects through real-life, hands-on application, where students can understand the concepts they’re learning through tangible examples. But these aren’t just examples for learning’s sake. Our projects meet real school and community needs, so our students’ education immediately serves those whose lives it touches.

Self-sustenance, sustainability in building—these are some of the principles we aim to pass onto the next generation, as we create caretakers of our community’s future, leaders of our islands … and we need your help.

Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke needs funding to keep our programs alive and functioning. We have a list of goals that need financial resources—your help, your donations can meet the needs of our community.

Of our current $100K goal:

We're fundraising $57K in support our of Building Program—
     • $37K to sponsor the building of handicap-access ramps, rails, and urgent building projects for elders in our community
     • $20K toward woodworking mentorships and the purchase of a wood mill

We're fundraising $28K in support our of Mahele Farm Program, Hana’s only community farm—
     • $18K to further our apprenticeship training program, as we create leaders of East Maui’s agricultural future
     • $10K for farm equipment and supplies

And we’re fundraising $15K in support of our Malama Haloa (Ku‘i Kalo) Program—as Hana youth learn to pound their own poi and pa‘i ‘ai, rediscovering kalo’s (taro’s) cultural significance for themselves and their ‘ohana (families).

The mission of Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke is to provide at-risk youth with a way to learn that makes sense to them, that builds their self-esteem and shows them they have the power to change their future.

Since 2000, Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike has successfully built lives in our community. With your donation, we hope to continue our work. Mahalo for your support.
