All money collected in the Maija Golden Creative Writing Fund will be donated to Long Hill students in order to advance his/her creative writing goals or towards activities that promote and enhance creative writing.

Maija Golden, a bright, creative, loving, and loveable child, touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her time among us was all too brief, but to the many she knew and loved, the boundless memories of her presence are everlasting and  provide at least a measure of   consolation during these dark days since her passing.

We will especially miss the happiness and joy Maija conveyed with her big smile and infectious laughter, and how her irreverence could lighten any room and brighten even the glummest of moods. The tears that have and will be shed for Maija are many - tears for a young woman with so much promise torn from us so abruptly, tears for a life cut tragically  short, and tears for what could and should have been.

Maija's passions were many. She deeply loved people, her large family and numerous friends both here in the United States and in Sweden are a testament to that; she loved animals, there is a very sad dog in Long Hill who already misses the walks in Hick’s Tract and her constant attention; she loved volunteering in the community,  a constant companion to her mother at library functions and her father's shadow at the Millington Volunteer Fire Company, a place of special significance to Maija and where she spent a lot of her time. 

 But Maija's greatest passion was writing – thankfully she left us with many stories and poems, a body of work that is a fount of solace in the uncertain times in which we now live. Humorous, poignant, dark and serious, they all provide a window into Maija’s view of the world, her feelings, her fears, and her hopes.

It is perhaps apt given Maija’s love of literature that we think of the words of the Greek poet Aeschylus,

“And even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.”

 If these words are true then we who are left are indeed wise.  These past few days have brought us such a vast store of wisdom, but wisdom we would gladly have foregone.

Maija's passing has left us  with a loss of her physical presence, but everyone whose life she touched will always carry Maija in their hearts.  Your gift of support is gratefully received and ensures that Maija's spirit will live on in the words and creativity of the recipeints of the  Maija Golden Creative Writing Fund.
