Margie needs some new wheels! 

Margaret is a Jawoyn/Dalabon woman from the Northern Territory with an incredible life story. Margaret began her life in Pine Creek and spent her childhood years in the Gimbat region alongside the South Alligator River.

In 1964 Margaret moved to Darwin to continue her studies at Darwin High. 

In 1967 Margaret returned to her home town of Pine Creek to attend a race meeting. Margaret loved horses and had spent her young life riding around her home in the Gimbat region (now part of Kakadu National Park). On this day, while getting on a race horse, the horse was riveted by the cracking of a dried twig and it bolted. Margaret wasn’t strong enough to control the horse and fell off. The accident injured Margaret’s spine and caused her to become a paraplegic. 

Now 68 years young, Margaret has lived one heck of a life, raising three daughters, winning medals at the Australian Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Games, maintaining full-time employment and always being a pillar of support for her family and community. 

Margie made the big decision to retire a few months ago after a lifetime of working.. and has just decided that retirement is boring and is heading back to work!

Driving around in her old Ford Falcon has gotten her by, but the old beast is also ready for retirement  and now as the main carer of her two grandsons, Margie needs more reliable transport to support her in maintaining her independence. 




We are raising funds to purchase a Subaru Outback and cover the costs to convert the vehicle to allow Margie to access it with a chair topper (sits on the roof and makes it easy to store) and hand controls. A vehicle specially designed like this would make simple daily tasks much easier and quicker for Margie and the boys. 

Subaru Outback will cost $41,990 and we have been given an estimate cost for conversions of $7,000.  Once formal quotations have been received more advice will be provided on this page.
