Magnus Needs New Knees

Our boy Magnus has ruptured his ACL and is currently walking on three legs! Magnus is barely two years old and is an extremely active high energy dog! He was a rescue dog that immediately grabbed our hearts when we met him and we can’t imagine not giving him the best possible life on four legs.
He was playing with his best buddy two nights ago and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There were no acrobatics that are unusual for those two playing and there were no yelps or limps, just big smiles-that is his favorite part of the day. He is a very stoic dog. The next morning however, he was walking on three legs and wouldn’t put his right rear leg down. He still didn’t complain, but his lack of activity and lack of the super crazy tail wag told me that he was in pain.
We went to the vet today and he was diagnosed with the ruptured ACL. This ligament keeps the tibia from being able to move away from the femur. Without it, the knee joint does not function correctly and will rapidly deteriorate without surgical correction. His vet referred him to a specialist surgeon and told me the most likely and most suitable surgery will be a TPLO. From the research I have done and calling a few other vets, this surgery is likely to cost roughly 3500 dollars at a minimum and that does not include the necessary physical therapy plus things he will need at home. Needless to say, this is an enormous financial hit. We wouldn’t think of not getting him fixed up though...we love him too much and we want his hopefully many many years with us to be as enjoyable for him as possible.
The recovery will be intense with up to 6 weeks confinement and very limited movement for 12 weeks. Full recovery doesn’t finish for 6 months. If this repair is not done, he will develop more soft tissue problems in that leg and possibly the other due to uneven weight distribution.
