Maelyn Justen- Our little Miracle

Krista had a scheduled c-section on Friday, October 12th when our precious miracle Maelyn Charlotte Justen was born. Weighing 8lbs. 5oz. Maelyn came out with a short cry and was in respiratory distress, as she was unable to breathe on her own. CPR was started and continued until they got her a ventilator. Her body wasn't getting the oxygen it needed as her limbs were showing cyanosis. The pediatric doctor said it must be something circulatory- her heart. It was soon apparent that Buffalo Hospital wasn't equipped to handle Maelyn's condition.
Maelyn was put into an incubator and was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Thankfully, Father Meyers was called and he was able to baptize her before leaving Buffalo Hospital.
Maelyn was taken to Children's where an echocardiogram was done along with a nonsurgical procedure, a balloon atrial septostomy. The echocardiogram confirms that Maelyn has HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome). Maelyn's heart has an enlarged left chamber which is caused from her damaged mitral valve. The mitral valve isn't working properly causing blood to pool into the left chamber (mitral regurgitation).
Krista was able to get transferred via ambulance to the Mother Baby center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital to be close to Maelyn and was discharged on Sunday, October 14th.
Maelyn is currently sedated from the procedure done on Friday afternoon. They are continuing to monitor her as the next tentative plan is a mechanical mitral value replacement. This surgery is not yet planned.
Maelyn's heart conditions were unknown at birth as Maelyn's doctor's believe her condition presented itself 20 to 30 weeks in utero.
As we all know with Josh and Krista, their faith in God has carried them this far.
