Madison's Battle With Cancer

Donation protected
Shortly after her sixteenth birthday on October 27th, 2017, Madison’s family received news that her biopsy was positive for a blue-cell tumor, later specified as Ewing’s sarcoma cancer, a very rare form of bone cancer that around 200 children and young adults are diagnosed with each year in the United States. Madison was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma localized around her right femur bone. In the ten months prior, she went through physical therapy to treat what was thought to be tendonitis in her leg, and she received multiple MRIs from January to July which showed no indication of a cancerous tumor. As time went on and her leg pain progressed to the point of difficulty walking, her leg was reimaged and sight of a tumor worried doctors.

Madison is receiving treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital and gets chemotherapy treatment every two weeks. Her timeline of treatment alternates between two day stays and five day stays at the hospital where she is constantly monitored by nurses and doctors. Although she may miss a portion of her junior year in high school, she is determined to keep up with her academic life as much as possible. She will stay on this regimen of chemotherapy until March when she will undergo surgery to remove the tumor from her leg. This surgery will be intense as it involves a partial hip replacement and possible bone graft or rod insertion. Following this surgery, Madison will go through physical therapy to regain strength in her leg and allow healing. Once healed after surgery, Madison will go through almost another year of chemotherapy to reach remission.

Because of the significant loss of wages Madison’s mother will face due to constant visits to the doctor and time spent with Madison during chemotherapy, donations are necessary to supplement the cost of living of the family. Donations will also be contributed to the cost of traveling to Madison’s appointments and the other items necessary to support her through her battle with Ewing’s sarcoma. At the start of the new year, the family will need to meet insurance deductibles, upping the cost of treating Madison for cancer. If all these vital necessities are met, Madison would like to attend a summer camp in Montana for children and teens with cancer if she is physically able at the time. The camp is free of cost, but attendees must arrive at camp by their own means. The family has set a goal of $25,000, and any additional donations not used directly for Madison's medical fund will be given to the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital and the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.
