Hey Everyone!
For those I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting, My name is Danielle. I'm 29 years old and I am an emerging fashion designer. I've lived and worked in NYC for the past 7 years, and in June 2015, life gave me the opportunity to travel to Zimbabwe and stay for a few months. While in that part of the world, I worked tirelessly to make connections with the most amazing, talented people who showed me how they venture in the creative process. I became passionately inspired to collaborate with various people from all the places I visited (Harare in Zimbabwe, Durban and Johannesburg in South Africa, and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia) in order to share with the world all the amazing handiwork that happens there.
The experience has inspired me in ways that you can't even imagine! The beauty in the diversity of the continent and the way in which clothing as a means of not only self expression, but a connection to culture, family, heritage, and homeland is breathtaking. How this form of expression has evolved and been interwoven into modern cosmopolitan lifestyle is incredible! Through my collection, I'd like to break down the artifical borders that colonization has created, and connect my experiences through travel via my clothing that will speak to both personal experience as well as shared experiences of us as a global community.
This is where you come in! My goal is to do this responsibly, ethically, and respectfully, treating everyone I work with like a respected collaborator, ensuring that they are paid fairly for the meticulous work that they do, BUT I can't do it all on my own!
From needles and thread, to travel expenses and production costs, through your generous support by September 2016 I will be able to establish my brand as a functioning LLC, travel to Ethiopia and South Africa to meet with ethical fabric and material sources as well as production facilities, and ensure that the end result is a tangible, carefully created collection of clothing that is made to last and made with love.
