What do a Consultant Quantity Surveyor and a Fisherman have in common?
Answer = Urhan GAA Club and a lifetime of involvement in the club between them both. From their sporting backgrounds these guys are very passionate around driving mental health awareness and have made the brave (and a little crazy!) decision to climb Kilimanjaro this September to raise funds for Suicide Prevention.
The charity they will fundraise for is Breaking The Silence, a voluntary group that specialises in providing FREE Suicide Intervention & Prevention Training. Peter & Brian spoke about this decision “We first met Breaking the Silence when our GAA Club, Urhan, asked them to become our sister charity. Prior to that and unfortunately since then, our community has, like most communities, been affected by ailing mental health and by suicide. However, thanks to Breaking the Silence’s expertise and compassion we have increased awareness and strove to increase prevention, linking those in need with the necessary help and skills. We know first-hand the great work they do.
We owe Breaking the Silence a lot. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a positive way to repay that.
We will pay 100% of our costs, and promise that 100% of your donation will go directly to this cause”.
The lads will be climbing from 15th to 25th September under the guidance of Pat Falvey and his team. They are hard at it now and training is in full swing with climbs most weeks, regardless of weather and possible hangovers! They tell us their biggest challenge in Africa will be the altitude and there is a specialised training weekend in Kerry in August to help prepare for this.
