Maasai women relief

Donation protected
We are raising money to continue the project called Maasai Women Relief, that aims to provide education about womens' health in areas of menstruation hygiene, safe childbirth and female genital mutilation. The project is initiated and led by Kalunze Mollel, who has been born and raised in a Maasai village in Tanzania and thus understands the culture thoroughly. He has seen the negative effects of lack of education about the above matters, and is now leading this project to make the future brighter for all Maasai women across East Africa.

There are over 1,5 million Maasai in Tanzania and Kenya. The large majority of the Maasai women don't have access to sanitary pads, give birth in the villages without professional help and undergo female genital mutilation as part of their initiation ceremony while moving from being a child to being a woman. We aim to provide education in a peaceful manner and to work together with the Maasai to achieve meaningful and lasting change.

The first trip to a selected village in Tanzania was made in July 2018 and education to the women of the village was provided about menstruation hygiene. They had a chance to discuss about the matters with the representatives of this project with the help of a translator. The team donated 100 menstruation cups along with the education of how to use them, in aim to offer a solution to the lack of sanitary pads and to improve female hygiene during menstruation.

Second trip was made to several villages by Kalu, and made possible with the donations through GoFundMe. The trip was organised mainly to survey the attitudes and opinions about menstruation hygiene, safe childbirth and female genital mutilation among the population. The aim of the trip was to understand the attitudes behind the traditions and open the discussion with the Maasai people about alternative ways. In addition to women, we aim to influence the men of the villages to start considering other options. We believe that getting the men and especially the elders of the villages on board is the best way forward, as they have the most power and authority within the villages to make such decisions.
