Help Rosie walk again!!

Family and Friends

As you may know, on October 2nd, our beloved Rose (Skrak) McLaughlin (daughter of Lucille Skrak, Sister of Christine Skrak and Kathy D'Adamo and mother of Alicia McLaughlin) had a hemorrhagic stroke with bleeding in the right hemisphere of her brain. She was by herself at work, and laid there for almost an hour knowing what happened but unable to move. Luckily, someone who happened to be working on a sign project that day came into the office and found her and called 911. She is very lucky to have survived this ordeal, but as you know, she is one of the strongest people we know!
It took three weeks to get her stabilized enough to remove feeding tubes so she could swallow and eat on her own, and now, after 4 weeks in the hospital, and 2 weeks in a rehabilitation facility, she looks like our old Rosie again, except that she cannot yet move her left side. This is because of the bleeding in the right brain which controls her left side. It is the most difficult type of stroke-paralysis to overcome and it takes time. She is responding well to therapy, but her insurance is ready to cut off her care. It makes no sense why they do this when she is making progress and unable to go home, even with a home caregiver.
We are determined to keep her in the rehab facility until she gains mobility on her left side. She has a long road ahead, and is determined to make that full recovery, and that is half the battle! We don’t know how long it will take, but we are going to make it happen. The first 3 months are the most critical to get proper care and therapy. She will be eligible for Medicare on January 1st.
Many of you have asked what you can do to help. At this juncture, we are looking to keep her in the Rehabilitation Center until she can move her left side, or until her Medicare kicks in in 2020. We estimate this to be close to $20,000.00. We may also need to make some in-home adjustments when she is ready to come home.

A bit more info it interested: Cognitively, Rosie is all there; her thought process and ability to speak and communicate is not affected by the right brain. The right brain controls the left side, creativity and emotions. You can see from the photos that her emotions are back! Love those smiles and laughs.
Progress so far includes ability to swallow, left side face functioning again, emotions coming back, standing and sitting straight, putting weight on her left side.
Next level will be full weight and walking with assistance. Many people with this exact type of stroke paralysis have 100% recovery, but can take up to a year or more of consistent work on her part.
