Little Bear, who is only 3 months old,  was brought to Genessee County Animal Control Saturday, October 29 in serious condition. She had been viciously attacked by another dog and her throat and ear were torn open. She had multiple bite wounds all over her little body and the wounds were terribly infected. They knew it was a life or death situation and she was rushed to the emergency vet. They were able to stabilize her and after a brief stay she returned to animal control. Yesterday, Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue stepped up and took Little Bear into their care. Her infection is so severe, she is in danger of becoming septic. Because the tissue has become necrotic, she will lose her ear and her ear canal will have to be refashioned.

Little Bear is in bad shape, but she is showing us she is a fighter. Despite her pain and what she has been through, she is still wagging her tail and giving kisses. As scared and hurt as she is, she wants to live!

If she is going to survive this ordeal, Little Bear needs to see specialists this week. She is going to need several surgeries. The cost will be extreme and the recovery  long. We know it is worth it, though, because this little baby deserves a chance at a wonderful life. Won't you please help us help Little Bear?

Little Bear has settled nicely into her foster home where she is getting some well-deserved spoiling! She has other dogs to play with and is growing quickly. She is up to 24 pounds! She went back to Wilson's this week to get rechecked and went under anesthetic to get her stitches out. There is some concern as she seems to be having pain in her shoulders and back. Originally the vet thought it was just lingering pain from the attack. However, it has been several weeks and she is still hurting. She will likely need X-rays at her next follow-up appointment if the problem continues. In the meantime, she is enjoying just being a puppy and loving all the attention she is getting!

LIttle Bear left the vet hospital on Thursday and is settling in at her foster's home. She is trying to get adjusted to life in a cone! She will return to Wilson's in a week for a recheck, then in two weeks she will have to be given anesthesia again so they can remove her sutures and flush out her ear canal. Further treatment, including possible skin grafts, will be discussed later. Overall, the best case scenario for Little Bear. We couldn't be happier about how she is progressing!

She is actually becoming quite famous. This campaign has been shared over 700 times on Facebook and she even had an article written about her in Pet Rescue Report, so people from all over are reading her story. Little Bear had multiple visitors over the weekend and was spoiled with cheeseburgers, new toys and lots of cuddles. Everyone that meets her, even the staff at the hospital, falls in love with our sweet girl!

The good news is that on Tuesday, the waiting was over and she had her surgery! She came through this first procedure with flying colors! She had a lateral ear resection, also called a ZEPP procedure. The ear flap was also removed along with all the surrounding dead tissue. We are hoping that through this procedure her hearing in that ear will be preserved, although there is a great deal of swelling at this point so it is too early to tell.

We are hopeful that the worst is over for this sweet girl. She will need multiple follow-up visits and procedures in the coming months as well as continued monitoring as she continues to grow. She will be leaving Wilson's tomorrow and going to her new medical foster home to get all the care that she will need. It's hard to imagine that a little over a week ago we were told there was no chance for this little dog to survive and she should be put down. Thankfully, that answer was not acceptable to the volunteers involved and because of them this little angel will walk out of that hospital tomorrow on the first steps to her wonderful new life.

We continue to be amazed and humbled by the support and love that has been shown to Little Bear. Her page has been shared over 600 times and generous donations continue to come in for this little dog. She has touched so many people's hearts and although her fight is not over, the odds seem finally to be in her favor. Thank you all for continuing to share, pray and donate for Little Bear. It has definitely been a large group effort to save the life of one little dog!

Little Bear is still at Wilson's Veterinary Hospital waiting for her surgery. She is on standby, so we don't know exactly when it will happen. In the meantime, she is enjoying treats from the staff and visits from Happy Days volunteers. She loves to cuddle and get attention!
