My best friend, Joan Helle-Fasolo, is fighting for her life. She is a mother of two sons, a wife, a sister, a Veteran and my best friend. She has Metastatic Breast Cancer, which has spread from her breasts to her spine, her liver, and her lung. It is terminal cancer that has wreaked havoc on her body, her life and her family's finances. She has had multiple surgeries and rehabilitation, and is about to have another one on her spine to correct a back full of hardware that is broken and damaged, causing excruciating pain, due to major surgical errors made. The accumulative financial burden is astronomical, and beyond what Joan's family can ever afford. Bills pile up and have created a hopeless situation and fear of keeping a roof over their heads, a situation no one should have to face, especially, while fighting for her life. With another complicated, painful and expensive back surgery and rehab coming up, 2 hours from her home, has created yet another "impossible" hurdle to overcome. Yet, Joan never gives up. She has an amazing attitude, and a loving, warm spirit.
If you know Joan, she has no doubt touched your life, she is quick to give of herself to help others, she's a staple in the community, her home is a place everyone wants to be as she greets everyone with open arms, an open heart and treats you like family. Joan's situation is dire, but you'll never hear this from her because that's not who she is. I have known this wonderful woman for more than 30 years and have been the recipient of her warmth, giving nature, kindness, and generous spirit. I feel not only compelled to help her in her time of need, as she has been there for countless others, but it is my honor as her closest friend to do so.
