LVHS's Book Genies Destination Imagination team, is a Virginia State Championship team who has qualified to compete in Destination Imagination's Global Finals 2017 tournament. This international-level tournament is the largest creative thinking and problem solving competition in the world.
The team is the only secondary level team from Loudoun County Public Schools to qualify to move on to the Global Finals tournament. They will compete with other teams from all across the United States and from over 45 different countries in the "Service Learning" challenge. This challenge is one of seven, open-ended challenges that require students to apply science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), in addition to improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, teamwork, and community service.
The team was recognized as one of the top teams competing in the state of Virginia. Specifically, their team identified a community need that focused on early elementary English Language Learners. The team found research that showed that students taught to read in their primary language transition to a second language easier and faster. Based upon this research, the team designed a project that collected used children’s books, featuring high-frequency English vocabulary, and translated the English into Spanish giving the students the ability to work in both languages at the same time. After the books were translated the team visited a local elementary school to work with a group of their ELL students to read the translated books. The team encouraged the children to take the translated books home to practice reading with their parents, thus improving their reading skills in English as well. The team’s dedication in designing and carrying out a project that addressed their identified community need earned them a state championship title and the chance to compete at the international level.
The team will proudly represent LCPS, LVHS, the town of Purcellville and the entire state of Virginia in the "Ready, Willing, Fable" challenge at the University of Tennessee May 22-27.
For the team to compete however, they need your help, and soon (deadline to raise money is 6/9/17)!!!
