Hi, my name is Angel and I’m a trans girl taking steps to begin hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I’m a university student currently living in the Bay Area, where I am studying architecture at UC Berkeley. For as long as I can remember, I have felt uncomfortable with my body, but not until I started college was I able to find words to describe this discomfort: I realized that I suffer from gender dysphoria and that I identify as a trans girl. I have been out as trans to my friends starting in 2015, and to my family the year after, though they choose to ignore my gender identity.
This semester has been particularly rough for me, as I have been readmitted into UCB after having taken a semester off to seek medical attention regarding my mental health. Unfortunately, that means that I do not have any disposable income to pay for HRT because most of money goes towards tuition, rent, and studio expenses.
With the current state of Western healthcare, and especially trans healthcare in America, the cost for transitioning is very expensive. For many trans people, the process of transitioning is near unachievable because of the many financial roadblocks that stand in our way. Fortunately, Planned Parenthood in El Cerrito provides HRT and trans counseling at a much lower cost than many healthcare providers. I am seeking help to pay the cost of an initial exam plus up to 12 months of monthly drug, monitoring, and nutraceutical costs. I will have to pay out of pocket because my parents do not accept that I am trans and cannot know that I will be starting HRT.
It is my 22nd birthday on December 7 (tomorrow!! if you are reading this at the time of its posting) and I would consider this the best birthday gift I could ask for. Any donation will be much appreciated, and I will be eternally, immensely grateful to you for helping me to make the transition to be my truest self as easy and comforting as possible.
