Hello Family and Friends,
I pray that all is well with everyone. As some of you may know, I was diagnosed with lupus in 2003. When I was initially diagnosed, nodules were discovered in my lungs and as a result, I have developed serious breathing difficulties. Over the years it has become more and more prevalent and has caused my daily quality of life to suffer. Exactly 14 months ago, I was hospitalized with severe respiratory failure and had to subsequently be put on oxygen around the clock. Being on oxygen has helped me a little with day to day activities but at this point, it is one of the last treatment sources that my medical team has to offer.
Today, I am faced with the ultimate and last course of action; a lung transplant. I have been diagnosed with INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE (ILD) and MIXED CONNECTIVE TISSUES DISEASE. We all know how expensive health care is. I have been receiving Disability benefits for the last 2 years. Prior to June 2019, I was uninsured and have had to pay for health care out of pocket. This has not left much income to save. Even with insurance, the lung transplant requires me to pay a large copay upfront before my name can be placed on the transplant list. These funds will be used for post-surgery care. After surgery, MUSC requires that I live close to the hospital as I will have scheduled appointments every day for the first 30 days. This means I will have to pay for a hotel or an apartment near the hospital for 30 to 60 days post-surgery. I will also be prescribed many different transpant Immunosupressive medications which could cause hundreds of dollars per prescription and insurance will not pay for them all. It is also required that I have necessary dental procedures performed prior to surgery.
Due to the expenses associated with the lung transplant, I am asking for your help to secure my name on the transplant list. No monetary amount is too small, and all donations will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE “HELP LATONNYA GET A NEW LUNG.”
