My name is Bukenya Muusa, I’m the founder of Volunteer Action Network (Vac-Net) a Ugandan based NGO that empowers underserved women in northern Uganda through micro loans, health education and leadership programs, creating opportunities while strengthening families. Since 2005 when me and other volunteers who live and serve in the region, realized the worsening situation of the rural poor, especially women who are adversely affected by the Socio-economic imbalance. We envisioned a community free of poverty and diseases.

We have dedicated all our efforts  and are investing in women and young girls through business skills training, micro loans to provide not only economic opportunities, but health educational and leadership  opportunities as well. This approach helps women to build livelihoods for their families and communities. The uniqueness of our holistic programming lies in its ability to create platforms for identifying and addressing the challenges facing underserved women in Uganda.

My dedication is to work with grassroots women who are working every day to create a better future for themselves and their children. They are in villages, markets selling goods, produce, raising livestock, agriculture, rebuilding their communities; participating in community planning meetings, taking care of their children, hauling water, cooking, cleaning, and lobbying for a space for their voices to be heard and respected.

Of recent there are 36,000 South Sudan refugees in Bolore and Pagirinya Refugee settlements, 72% are young girls, women and children between 9 to 18 years with no access to sanitary pads, clean water and other basic needs. We are responding to this crisis by manufacturing and supplying free Lucky Girls Sanitary Pads, and providing education around menstrual health management to refugees. We are supplying to over 3000 young girls with the Luck Girls Sanitary Pads that we produce from our factory in Gulu.

In Uganda, drop-out rates are high for rural girls. Up to 80% of girls entering primary school will never complete their primary education. Uganda has the highest teen pregnancy rate in sub-Saharan Africa with over 30% of Ugandan girls having their first baby by the time they are 18. HIV infection rates are 9 times higher in girls than boys the same age and Uganda has one of the highest maternal death rates in the world, 25% of which are from unsafe abortions.

We will keep refugee girls in school which in turn will affect the entire community through training students to act as peer leaders about reproductive health, distribution of sanitary pads to girls in school and making  sanitary pads for themselves . Early data show that the programs have had a remarkable impact.

We have already set a factory and trained 28 young girls who produces the Lucky Girl Sanitary pads that are supplied for free to school, and refugee settlement. Every month we need to supply 8000 packs we will need constant supply of the materials that we use to produce the pads. To sustain this wonderful project we need $25,000 annually

I have witnessed how  little amounts of dollars counts  and can be revolutionary to many peoples lives  in Uganda than you'd expect. I we'd love you to support us though your donation and encourage donors, and and friends to join us in this cause. Thank you so much!
