Lucia Allyn was born on February 11, 2017. Though her birth became complicated in the final hour, an emergency C-section was successfully performed and Lucia was born at 11:16pm.
Lucia's troubles began a couple days later but we were assured by the doctor that everything was ok. By the time Lucia was 12 days old, she became noticeably ill and it was apparent that she was suffering. She was taken to Scottish Rite and was immediately admitted and emergency surgery was performed. This surgery brought Lucia relief, but was only the start of things to come.
The nature of Lucia's issue is an intestinal anomaly that prevents her body from getting out the toxins and wastes that need to be released. Her first surgery resulted in what is most easily described as an intestinal bypass, in order to allow her body to get waste out. Her intestine was at the point of rupture when surgery was performed but fortunately, through the grace of God, she made it to the operating room in time. She was discharged over a week later after staying in the NICU, but due to complications from the surgery, Lucia was returned to the Scottish Rite emergency room and once again admitted for an extended stay.
Assuming all goes well, she has 2 more surgeries to get through before she is all done. This is the day that we pray for.
Those of you who know us know that we are not the type to ask for handouts, however now that we are parents, we have come to the point where we have to swallow our pride and ask for help. Due to these circumstances, for the last few months we have been reduced to a single income family in order to give Lucia the proper care she needs. We've come to realize that we are unable to keep up with the bills/expenses and still have at least 2 more surgeries incoming. Because of this, her mother has begun working again at and I have begun putting in significant hours at a second job. Unfortunately, we still can not catch up on the bills.
