My name is Heidi Devlin and I am raising money to help my brother Mike pay for cancer treatment and the plethora of other critical health and financial issues that he is struggling with right now. He is a kind man with a good heart who has worked hard his whole life, though life hasn’t always been very kind to him.
Prior to his illness, Mike lived with and took care of our father for years. They were best friends. Soon after our father passed away, Mike lost his only child due to complications from a bacterial infection in his heart. Since suffering those devastating losses, Mike was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer. He has become impoverished and is living solely off of disability and medical assistance. He received his diagnosis about three years ago and has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He's had numerous surgeries, including a tracheotomy and larynx removal that’s left him tied to a feeding tube and unable to speak. He recently had a stroke that’s taken away most of the use of his right side. Mike is very weak, in a lot of pain and now has difficulty communicating.
He lives with a friend who takes care of him full-time. Their home is approximately 25 miles from the nearest hospital and they have no working automobile. Even though Mike lives a very spartan existence—no air-conditioning; no cable tv, etc.—he can’t pay his bills since he’s become sick. His battle with cancer has cost him the ability to work and provide for himself. It’s left him completely penniless, and in dire need of financial assistance. I've been doing all I can to help him, but I'm becoming overwhelmed and I’m almost out of funds. Reaching out to all of you for donations is the only chance he’s got to get through this.
I am hoping to collect enough money to buy Mike a reliable used car so his friend can take him to his medical appointments and to the hospital for treatment. I’ve also been advised that he needs a landline phone to make it possible for 911 responders to locate him if there is an emergency, since he can't communicate. If donations exceed the cost of these basic necessities, any surplus will be used to help him keep up with his bills so he doesn't lose his home.
I love my little brother dearly and would appreciate any help, no matter how small. Any contribution that you make will ease some of his suffering and allow him to focus on getting better rather than worrying about transportation and bills.
