Helping refugees to Help themselves

Donation protected
HEARTHS is a most unique and significant human rights projects, with its aim to help improve the living conditions of many poor and suffering people all across Africa. In order to accomplish this, HEARTHS is not just focusing on the symptom of the problem, which is a great amount of overall poverty, hunger, sickness and lack of education of the people there, but to help address the root of the problem, which is the kind of mindset where people are hopeless and have lost faith in themselves and their own powers to create change. As the result of that, most everyone is waiting, praying and looking for help from somebody else, be it a sponsor, a leader, the government, or God, but they themselves are rather passive and inactive. This is why HEARTS is much more than just a human rights organization, which is helping help people with money for food, clothing and medicine, but also a school, where people learn that real change can only begin from within themselves.

HEARTHS, short for HElping African Refugees To Help themselves, registered in March of 2018 in Liberia as a human rights organization, but HEARTHS started in 2014 on Facebook with a few hundred members, but since then grew to almost 3000 members from all across Africa. The majority of our members are Liberian refugees, widows and orphans who lost their families during the civil war in Liberia, and who since then were then relocated to the Buduburam refugee camp, near the capital Accra in Ghana, where there live under very difficult living conditions, and with very few rights. We also have many other members in Liberia, Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, Gambia, Zambia, Côte d'Ivoire, as well as in some other African countries.

While most of our members are very poor, and without any school education, many of our other members are artists, students, models. writers, DJ's and leaders of various human aid organizations in Africa.

Over the years I attracted and developed a team of very educated, trustworthy and dedicated individuals, who are part of the HEARTHS leadership team. With their help we are conducting group meetings in Ghana and Liberia, to educate, inspire and empower our members in the spirit of HEARTHS, which is that regardless of one's personal challenges due to a lack of food, healthcare, housing and education, one has still the ability to create positive change.

HEARTHS projects

To start helping poor people and refugees in Africa to learn what they can do to help themselves, we therefore suggest the following:

1. The establishment of a school, an online school through Facebook or skype, in combination with physical meetings on the refugee camp in Ghana and all across Africa, so our members can learn practical skills of how they can help themselves. For physical workshops/ dinners in Ghana and other part of Africa, we will invite one prominent teacher or speaker from the community during every meeting, to have him/her speak to the group based on selected topics like personal hygiene, basic healthcare, the significance of trust, honesty, teamwork, time management, project development and leadership skills.

Workshop Objectives

° Promote Oneness and Unity: Meeting regularly as a group in itself energizes and boost the spirit of togetherness and make one to care and create love for one another as a group.

° Promote better understanding of the group vision and help every member to keep abreast of the day-to-day activity of the group project and progress and issue(s) relating to the growth and aim for which the group was formed.

° Provide Member with at least one meal per day. This will encourage members, who otherwise would be roaming the streets in search for work, food or entertainment to attend the meeting where they get fed while at the same time receiving some very necessary education and motivation.

2. In our efforts to become more organized we need to rent an office space for regular meetings and workshops, but also as a counseling center for many of the troubled youth, and to run a business to support the various projects and activities of HEARTHS.

The cost to rent this space on the Buduburam Refugee camp in Ghana, with 4 rooms, and inside bath (which is rather rare and important, since most everyone on the camp needs to pay money to even use the toilet) and an outside porch is $2000 for two years.

In Liberia we also found a place which is perfect for an office, which was made available to use free of rent by one of our members, but it needs some renovation, which adds up to about $1000.

3. The establishment of simple businesses.

With the income of those businesses entire families can support themselves. We suggest to start at a few of those businesses, which can help support some of our activities, and to provide our members with something specific to work on. Ideas for different businesses are a used clothes business, a photo shop, a business selling phone cards, selling rice, producing and selling things like jewelry and canes for old people, and different agricultural activities. The cost for any those businesses range from around $700 - $2000.

We all have the vision, skills and dedication to improve the life of many refugees and other poor people in Africa but are faced with many challenges, especially in regards to funding. We are therefore appealing to other humanitarians, private philanthropists, organizations and businesses to support our mission so we can effectively help African refugees and other poor people in Africa to help themselves.

As a sponsor, you will receive regular information, updates, pictures and videos to document the progress of our activities. You will also be able to be in direct contact with our members through Facebook and email.

Aside from your generous financial contributions, HEARTHS is also in need of laptop computers, cell phones and digital cameras, as well as clothing, medicine, disinfectants and school supplies.

It would be also great if we could join an existing organization that is already doing humanitarian work in Africa, and who can help us by sending volunteers to Ghana, Liberia or other African countries where HEARTHS is active, who can support, guide, educate and empower our members and help develop a strong organizational structure.

From the bottom of our hearts we appreciate your time and interest, and we would be wholeheartedly grateful for your much needed support.

We are HEARTHS, and our spirit is love.
